Flights targeted by lasers

05.08.09

A warning about the dangers of shining lasers at aircraft heading to Liverpool Airport has been issued by Cheshire Police. It came after several incidents in the Frodsham and Chester areas last week. Police said the lasers could cause temporary blindness for pilots, leading to a disaster.

The first incident happened late on July 27 when an inbound aircraft from Milan had a green laser directed toward it. A few days later an aircraft from Ibiza was descending at 3000ft when a green laser was directed toward it as it was in a descending turn across Frodsham. Another incident happened on July 31 where pilots reported a green light being shone at them near the Broughton area.

In all 3 cases, the planes landed safely and Cheshire Police are certain the same group is responsible for each of the incidents. Police and airport authorities have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
