MP calls for army to protect airports
04.06.08
A special army unit should be formed to secure the airports and ports against illegal immigrants and terrorists a Lancashire MP told the BBC. Lindsey Hoyle, MP for Chorley, has submitted the suggestion to Gordon Brown for consideration as part of the Terrorism Bill.
Mr Hoyle says that the army has invaluable experience of border control gained from the troubles in Northern Ireland, and that they could help the Boarder Control Agency make the UK more secure.
The MP told the BBC: ‘The main port in the north west is obviously is Liverpool and Fleetwood as well and Heysham and the two airports Liverpool Airport and the major airport of Manchester. People would feel secure they would feel protected. It's not just about illegal immigration, it's terrorism, gun running and drug smuggling. We would be able to crack down on all those things that people are concerned about on the street.’
