Passengers up 13.7% this summer

More than 1.6 million passengers travelled through Liverpool Airport over the summer, as poor weather saw more holidaymakers head overseas. Figures released by the airport today show that its three biggest budget airlines recorded the largest increase in passengers in summer 2007, with easyJet just reclaiming the title of largest operator at the airport from rival Ryanair.
easyJet carried 691,243 passengers between June - August, a rise of 7.7% on the passenger numbers for 2006. It was the largest operator out of Liverpool Airport during the quarter, a title Ryanair had claimed in May.
The Irish airline saw a 30.1% increase in passenger numbers in June to August, carrying 684,509 passengers - less than 1% fewer than rival easyJet. Wizz Air, the Eastern European budget airline, saw a 32.3% growth, carrying 61,099 holidaymakers to destinations including Katowice, Warsaw and Gdansk.
The three budget airlines between them carried almost 90% of Liverpool Airport's passengers during the summer. However, the number of people travelling on flights with holiday companies such as Thomas Cook and MyTravel fell 6.3%, which reflects national trends. Total passengers for the three months showed an increase of 13.7%, with 1.6 million passengers passing through the airport compared with 1.4m in the same three months in 2006.
