Business travellers are being warned to keep an eye on their belongings, after a survey revealed that 8,500 mobile devices - laptops, PDAs and phones - are lost in UK airports each year. Those travelling through hubs in the north-west such as Liverpool Airport lose 100 portable computers and 800 mobile devices - including BlackBerrys and USB sticks.
But the figures from IT security firm SafeNet show that those travelling through London's airports are most likely to leave their mobiles or laptops in the departure lounge, items that can be expensive to replace. Passengers flying out from the capital's 5 airports are misplacing 400 laptops and 2,500 other mobile gadgets each year.
Gary Clark, vice president at SafeNet, said: 'Companies are investing large sums of money in protecting network data, only for employees to run the risk of losing it by carelessly misplacing laptops and mobile devices. As mobile working continues to grow across the UK and the globe, security for laptops and mobile devices is more critical than ever.'
