Taxi drivers plan 'go slow' protest on Friday

Taxi drivers at Liverpool Airport are to stage a 'drive slow' campaign later this week, in a row over fees to work at the airport. The Transport & General Workers Union (T&G) said the action on Friday will cause traffic chaos on roads leading to the airport.
More than 500 cabs are expected to descend on roads around the airport. The union said it was protesting against the introduction of an annual fee of £2,500 for black cab drivers to work at the airport, which officials described as a 'betrayal' of the memory of John Lennon.
Richie James, an official of the T&G, accused the airport's owners of 'greedy profiteering' and called the fees 'arbitrary, unfair and unrealistic'. But a spokesman for the airport insisted that it is one of the only airports in the country that does not charge, and that it needed to find ways of plugging the losses it suffers.
The fee is also linked to new driver facilities and a rest area. The airport has threatened to bring in private hire vehicles to run the service if the drivers refuse to pay the fee.
