Liverpool named airport of the year
15.09.07
Liverpool Airport has been named UK Airport of the Year by Travel Trade Gazette (TTG). The airport fought of stiff competition to win the magazines annual award, beating other short listed airports including Manchester, Birmingham, East Midlands, Luton and Bristol.
Readers of TTG, the UK's largest weekly newspaper for the travel trade, were asked to vote for their best UK airport. The top airports selected by the readers were short-listed and the six finalists went before a panel of 37 experts from organisations such as the Federation of Tour Operators, Global Travel Group and ABTA, who picked the winner.
In the UK airport category, the panel's decision was based on their experience plus aspects of each airport's business, including passenger and airline growth, improvements to public transport access, environmental initiatives and work within the local community.
A spokesman for Liverpool Airport said, although short-listed in previous years, this is the first time that we has been chosen as the UK's best airport. It is tremendous recognition of all the hard work and determination of staff in recent years.
Neil Pakey, the airport's Managing Director said: 'To win the industry's most prestigious airport award is a recognition of both [airport owner] Peel's belief in turning the airport into a real regional gateway and to the employees and businesses who work here to turn the investment into a real experience. This gives us confidence to keep pressing ahead and be at the forefront of the North West's regeneration programme.'
