Staff get 50p for catching Ryanair passengers with too big / heavy bags
15.11.11
Staff at Liverpool Airport are being paid a 50p bonus for every Ryanair passenger they catch with bags that are too big or too heavy, under a scheme that will mean holidaymakers no longer get the benefit of the doubt, the Telegraph reports. Staff have previously been given targets for the number of passengers charged excess baggage fees, with those missing the target facing disciplinary action or even the sack, but the bonus is a new low.
The new scheme means check in and gate staff have a financial incentive for cracking down on passengers whose hand luggage is slightly overweight or too big. For each bag identified as being too large or heavy for the flight deck, the staff member employed by handling firm Servisair will be given a 50p bonus. But 'to encourage further diligence' the payment will only come into effect if the employee reaches a target of at least 10 bags a week ! Offending passengers have to pay £40 to have their baggage put in the hold, unless they can remove weight or decide to leave them behind.
