Taxi driver protest cancelled
15.12.06
Taxi drivers have called off a 'drvie slow' demonstration over plans to introduce a charge of £2,400 a year to work at Liverpool Airport. Hackney cab drivers were planning to drive slowly on roads around the airport today, in protest at the annual levy.
The action was cancelled after a meeting with airport management led to further talks being planned for the New Year. The fees, which were due to come into force on 1 January, have been postponed.
Airport bosses say the charge, which equates to a daily fee of £6.85, will be ploughed back into the airport and would include improving facilities for taxi drivers. However, the Transport & General Workers' Union - which represents a number of the drivers - accused the airport's owners of 'greedy profiteering.'
