KLM to axe Amsterdam flights
15.12.11
KLM are to axe their flights between Liverpool Airport and Amsterdam, two years after restoring the route to its network. The airline blamed the continued economic downturn for the decision to end its three 3 daily service on 25 March 2012.
KLM's UK General Manager, Henri Hourcade, said: ‘We launched the flights in 2009, at a time of economic uncertainty, when many airlines were reducing their networks - especially out of the regions. We had encouraging results for the first 2 years, connecting Liverpool with over 150 destinations around the world. However, the continued economic downturn has meant we have had to make some tough decisions and unfortunately Liverpool is a casualty of that process.’
A spokesman for the airport said it would be making every effort to replace the service, adding there ‘remains a strong case for a service from Liverpool feeding into a hub airport to offer onward global connections’. It said passengers can still travel to Amsterdam Schiphol with easyJet, although with no interline agreement, using these flights this makes connections more difficult.
