AOA says European Parliament move is 'a step backwards'
17.01.08
The Airport Operators Association (AOA) has said that this week's vote in the European Parliament that will increase the number of UK airports subject to price regulation is 'a step backwards'. It has expressed disappointment that the EU has adopted an arbitrary minimum passenger threshold of 5 million.
Deputy Chair of the AOA (and managing director of Liverpool Airport), Neil Pakey, said: 'This legislation is a step backwards for the UK, and conflicts with the Department for Transport's own actions in de-designating Manchester Airport just 24 hours earlier.'
'The AOA has argued that the threshold for regulation of airport charging should be based on market share, not the blunt instrument of passenger numbers. We are working closely with the Government, the CAA and our European colleagues on this issue. We will continue to make the case for a fair system of regulation for UK airports.'
