Airport boss answers fastlane questions

17.03.08

In an article in the Isle of Man Today Newspaper, Robin Tudor, Liverpool Airport manager for corporate affairs, responds to a disgruntled report's questions about the ‘fastlane’ security line. Some of the answers make interesting reading, and we have summarised them below.

As readers have pointed out to us, the reporter says in a general rant before the questions that queuing at Liverpool Airport is getting worse, with 'the majority of the area we used to queue in has been taken over by the fastlane structure, complete with wobbling wooden walls and money eating barriers.'

'Those who don't want to pay have been pushed and squashed to the side and the queues seem to have gotten longer. And to add insult to injury, you barely ever see anyone use the fastlane system, begging the question of what the point of making everyone who, quite reasonably I feel, doesn't want to pay for security again (you've already paid the airline for it) feel like they're part of a herd.'

Q: How much money has the fastlane system made since it was introduced? How many passengers have used it since it was introduced?

A: Up to the end of January, more than 170,000 passengers had used the scheme. The tickets are £2 per person meaning during that period it raised £340,000.

Q: How many passengers have used the airport in total since it was introduced?

A: Around 1.5 million passengers had used the airport since July, 2007. This means more than 11% of departing passengers have used fastlane during that time. 'This far exceeds our expectations and at the peak times in excess of 25% of passengers are now using fastlane.'

Q: Has the security waiting time increased for passengers who do not want to use the fastlane system? By how much on average?

A: 'The fastlane is not the cause of queues and it actually gives passengers the opportunity to reduce their queuing time.'

Q: Do you feel the system has been a success?

A: 'The airport certainly believes that the scheme has been a success. However, as with any new system and particularly one that this airport has pioneered, the scheme is being monitored and reviewed looking at ways to improve the process for both fastlane and standard lane users.'
