Landing lights upgrade completed

Whilst work on improving areas in the terminal building at Liverpool Airport has been ongoing in recent months, it has also been upgrading and improving essential facilities for its airline customers. £600,000 has been spent on replacing and upgrading the approach lights for Runway 27, at the eastern end of the airfield. These lights are essential in aiding the safe and efficient arrival of aircraft both during the day and night.
Over 230 new lights have been installed on 142 poles to replace those fitted 20 years ago, with the project taking more than five months to complete. The new approach lights will ensure that planes can continue to land in Category III conditions, which are associated with poor visibility often seen at the airport given its proximity to water.
A spokesman for the airport said: ‘The previous approach lights had reached the end of their useful life. However, as with any major work at the airport, we don’t have the luxury of replacing them all at one time. The contractor has to work round the times of any arriving aircraft, so this has been a difficult job to complete. We expect these new lights to be helping planes land at Liverpool Airport for the next 20 years.’
