Strike starts
20.08.09
About 150 ground staff, including baggage handlers, walked out on strike at Liverpool Airport at 04:00 this morning in a row over job losses. The strike is indefinite, and will carry on until the dispute is resolved.
Negotiations between the GMB union and Servisair failed to break the deadlock yesterday. The union was seeking assurances that no worker would face compulsory redundancy under the cost-cutting plans that will see 50 workers forced to reapply for 27 jobs.
Servisair workers at the airport serve passengers on flights with Ryanair, KLM, Wizzair, Flybe and Thomson. The airport said it has been assured that it would be ‘business as usual’, with contingency plans were in place to make sure passengers were not inconvenienced.
Ryanair has asked that all passengers arrive early. Its airport check-in and bag drop desks open two hours prior to the scheduled flight departure time.
