No free airport parking for ash delay passengers
22.04.10
Liverpool Airport has announced that it will not waive airport parking fees for passengers stuck abroad by the volcanic ash shutdown. It will reduce the car parking rates to travellers who were left stranded by flight cancellations, but unlike many other UK airports, it will not waive them.
The airport has confirmed that it will reduce its daily overstay penalty from £27 to £7, its cheapest normal rate, 'to avoid excessively penalising owners who have been unable to return home and move their vehicle', the Liverpool Echo reports.
An airport spokesman acknowledged that the grounding of flights across the UK represents a ‘difficult situation’, but defended the decision to charge the overstay fees. He said: ‘We still have to pay for heating, lighting and staff in the car parks and we cannot do that for nothing.’
Unlike Liverpool, a number of other UK airports - including Heathrow, Stansted, Gatwick, Luton, Edinburgh and Glasgow - have all said that they will not charge passengers who have overstayed through no fault of their own extra for their car parking.
