Firefighter cleared over airport crash death

An investigation will be carried out by Merseyside fire department into a fatal accident after firefighter David Robinson was cleared over the death of a motorist in the crash earlier this year. Mr Robinson, 36, was found not guilty at Liverpool crown court of causing death by dangerous driving and careless driving yesterday, after 46 year old father-of-two Derek Kelly was killed in January.
Mr Robinson was on an emergency call to Liverpool Airport when he drove a fire engine through a red light and collided with a Mercedes being driven by Mr Kelly, who was left with fatal injuries by the smash in Garston Way near the hub.
Fire chiefs have said they will examine the circumstances surrounding the incident after yesterday's court verdict. A Merseyside Fire and Rescue statement called the incident a 'tragic accident' and extended its condolences to the Mr Kelly's family.
During the trial, the court heard that Mr Robinson had driven his four-and-a-half-tonne fire engine through south Liverpool after reports that a plane had to perform an emergency landing at the airport.
