easyJet is celebrating 10 years of operating at Liverpool Airport this week. The budget airline's first flights from the Merseyside hub - to Amsterdam - took off on October 27 1997, less than two years after easyJet was set up. Its celebrations at the airport will go on all this week, including competitions, parties, birthday cake and champagne for passengers.
Over the last 10 years the airline's flights from Liverpool, just like the airline itself, have gone from strength to strength. It now has 8 aircraft based at the airport and flies 2.5 million passengers a year on 19 routes to 7 countries.
Andy Harrison, easyJet's chief executive, said: 'The arrival of easyJet at Liverpool 10 years ago not only provided the region with direct low-fare flights to Europe but also boosted the local economy with its investment and jobs in the area.' He added that new flights to Lisbon will launch next week, with flights to Innsbruck taking off in December, in time for the ski season.
Neil Pakey, Managing Director at Liverpool Airport, said: 'Since easyJet began operations from Liverpool in 1997, it has carried over 17 million passengers. Its arrival in Liverpool has played a critical role in putting the city in the heart of Europe and Europe in the heart of Liverpool.'
