Firefighters could join strike

The strike at Liverpool Airport could escalate to include 55 firefighters, the Post reports. It has not had any affect on flights so far, and the union may be looking to escalate the action in order to involve the airport directly. Any problems with fire cover would close the airport.
Around 150 staff employed by Servisair responsible for baggage handling and directing aircraft have been on indefinite strike since Thursday, after the company announced plans to make 51 employees apply for 27 jobs. However, the company has brought in staff to cover those on strike, with the action not affecting flights so far.
Fire service staff could now be balloted after the GMB union claimed the airport has broken an agreement on how the strike would be handled. A spokesman told the newspaper there had been an agreement that, so long as other companies involved in the management of the airport or services did not become involved, other branches of the union would not get involved.
Eddie Parker, GMB regional organiser, said at the weekend airport staff had been involved in escorting what the union branded as 'scab labour' on to the site. He told the Post the union intended to inform Liverpool Airport that GMB members in the airport's fire service had requested to be allowed to consult on the possibility of balloting for strike action. An airport spokesman denied other staff had become involved in the dispute.
