Strike talks continue after mass meeting

Liverpool Airport managers said they were confident they can avoid strikes in a dispute with staff over pay. A spokesman said the results from 5 mass meetings with staff had been positive ahead of a ballot on possible industrial action.
Members of the GMB and Unite unions rejected the airport's 'final' pay and conditions offer by 82% in a ballot earlier this month. The deal would have been worth 3.8% backdated to April, rising to 4% from the beginning of October.
Staff, including firefighters and air-side safety workers, will begin balloting from Friday on whether to take strike action in support of their pay and working conditions claim. The result is expected to be announced on November 9.
If staff support the call for walkouts, the airport could be closed due to lack of fire cover. However, even though management have not increased their offer, they have pledged to continue talks with union representatives during the ballot.
