Cancer patient in court over cannabis smuggling
26.02.09
A cancer sufferer has admitted trying to smuggle 1.5kg of cannabis through Liverpool Airport. But Brian Anthony Martin told a court yesterday that he had only imported the class B drug, with an estimated value of £5000, as a means of personal pain relief as he goes through chemotherapy.
Mr Martin, 26, was arrested at Liverpool Airport by Customs officers on Sunday February 8 after flying in from Amsterdam with a herbal form of the drug in footwear and luggage. He admitted importing the drugs. District Judge Trevor Chatelier heard that he has a previous conviction for drug offences dating back to 2004.
Judge Chatalier committed the case to Liverpool Crown Court on the week beginning April 6, saying his sentencing powers as a magistrate were not great enough. Carol Clarke, prosecuting, indicated that the crime could carry up to a 3 year jail sentence.
