Planes are operating with more full seats at Liverpool Airport, according to the Civil Aviation Authority's (CAA) latest figures. They show that the number of flights at the airport were down 6.5% in the first six months of 2007 compared with 2006, but the number of passengers over the same period was up 10.5%.
The reduction in flights has been blamed mainly on consolidation within the package holiday market, which has led to fewer charter flights. The link to London City Airport, which was operating several times a day last year, also stopped during the summer. However, those flights operating from the airport are flying have been fuller, with larger planes on some routes, meaning that overall passengers are ahead of last year.
Just under 459,000 passengers travelled via Liverpool Airport last month, giving the airport an total so far this year of 5,436,314. It is expected to break through the 6m passenger mark for the first time this year.
