Two baggage handlers cleared of suitcase theft

Two Liverpool Airport baggage handlers have been acquitted of stealing cigarettes from a passenger's suitcase. A third baggage handler has admitted the charge.
Adrian Currums, 39, and Paul Hudson, 20, were found not guilty after prosecutors decided to offer no evidence against them at Liverpool crown court yesterday. The pair were suspended after a routine stop and search by airport security staff in March.
A third baggage handler, 56-year-old Michael Rice, has admitted taking cigarettes that did not belong to him. He was found with 1200 Lambert and Butler cigarettes and says he took them after finding them left in the airport. He will be sentenced on December 11.
The three were stopped as they were leaving work at the end of a shift on March 13. Yesterday Mr Currums, who was accused of being found with 600 cigarettes, was acquitted and discharged by the judge. Mr Hudson was also acquitted of being found with 400 cigarettes.
All 3 men originally pleaded not guilty to theft at a brief hearing before Liverpool magistrates in June and chose a trial by crown court jury.
