Southport bus service axed
30.05.08
Bus company Arriva has axed its direct route from Southport to Liverpool Airport due to a lack of passengers. The 48A service now travels only as far as the city centre, requiring travellers to change on their way to catch a flight.
The route’s withdrawal last Sunday comes only 14 months after it was launched – amid high hopes it would prove popular among locals travelling to the airport. However, ‘very few people’ were staying on the bus all the way from Southport to the airport, Arriva said.
The bus service faced competition from the Merseyrail service from Southport to the Liverpool South Parkway interchange, from where shuttle buses run to the airport. This is a lot more comfortable as well and a lot quicker.
