New carbon capture trial to be launched next month
30.12.08
Liverpool Airport is to launch a trail of experimental carbon capture technology. It has teamed with UK-based Origo Industries to launch a program that will capture CO2 emissions from the terminal building. The captured emissions will be recycled through a photo-bioreactor (PBR) to create algae-based biofuel that will be used to power the airport’s ground vehicles.
The process works by taking captured CO2 and filtering it through Origo’s ‘Ecobox‘ into the PBR, where can then be recycled into biofuel. The remaining biomass will go through a drying process and be put in a burner to heat the airport and supply hot water.
Origo’s system will be installed in January and will provide up to 250 litres of biofuel each day. If successful, the airport said that it could install a larger unit that would generate up to 3,000 litres per day.
